Abstract

This article explores the role of Baitul Quran PSQ Mosque in South Tangerang in promoting environmental sustainability through a thematic interpretation (tafsir al-mawdhu‘i) of Qur’anic verses related to ecology. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach, supported by participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of mosque activities. The findings reveal that Qur’anic values on stewardship (QS. Al-Baqarah: 30), the prohibition of corruption (QS. Ar-Rum: 41), environmental balance (QS. Ar-Rahman: 7–9), and anti-wastefulness (QS. Al-Isra’: 27) are not only interpreted textually but also implemented through educational initiatives and tangible actions. The mosque promotes environmentally friendly practices through architectural design that augments natural light and airflow, energy and water efficiency, eco-learning gardens, and inclusive facilities for persons with disabilities as a manifestation of spatial justice and inclusive spirituality. Furthermore, the mosque  institutional strength lies in its leadership structure, which includes a Council of Qur’anic Experts, Advisory Board, and Board of Trustees consisting of prominent national scholars in Qur’anic studies, education, and social development. Through the synergy of Qur’anic values, ecological social movements, and scholarly authority, Bayt Al-Quran PSQ Mosque stands as a prototype of a suitable  interpretation (tafsir ‘amali) that manifests environmental care as an act of worship.
