Tradisi Minoritas Muslim dan Toleransi di Lingkungan Kristen: Konstruksi Identitas Muslim Kendahe di Perbatasan Indonesia-Filipina Muslim Minority Traditions and Tolerance in the Christian Environment: Identity Construction of the Kendahe Muslim on the Indonesia-Philippines Border
Main Article Content
Abstract
Kedahe is located in the Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, which is directly connected to the Philippines. As the territory of the former Islamic kingdom of Kendar or Kendahe, but now Islam is a minority religion in this region. The process of Islamization in this area is recorded due to the influence of the Sultanate of Sulu and the Sultanate of Ternate in the 15th century. This study uses a descriptive-approach, with data collection techniques: literature study, interviews, observation and documentation. The research findings, although Kendahe Muslims are a minority on the border, the Kendahe Muslim community still maintains and their traditions are passed down from generation to generation. For them, the Islamic tradition is the glue of tolerance and a form of existence. However, the existence of Masade's local religion, also known as Old Islam, is a challenge in itself regarding the existence of formal Islam in Kendahe. Tensions arise because of theological differences and similarities in some religious rituals. However, it does not end in a conflict that pursues violence. Even though Islam is a minority in the Indonesia-Philippines border area, tolerance is maintained and mutual respect between tribes, races and religions makes Kedahe in particular and the Sangihe Islands generally safe border areas.
