Abstract

Religious Moderation is one of the government's priority programs in the field of religion as stated in the 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). This program was initiated as a cultural strategy in maintaining the multiculturality of religion and diversity in the country. Nevertheless, the program which was intensified by President Joko Widodo seemed to have a paradoxical side. This paradoxical moment comes from an assumption that the mainstreaming program of religious moderation, which promotes tolerant religious practices, actually acts intolerantly towards religious groups that are contrary to the view of the government. The state, in this case, is seen as undertaking a self-defense mechanism to maintain the religious practice it wants by eliminating different views. Through a critical explanation of the religious moderation program in existentialist and evolutionist perspectives, and using the views of Karl R. Popper, Will Kymlicka, and Amartya Sen, this research answers these assumptions.
